Context

We currently have an opportunity for an experienced Design Manager to join our growing engineering team. This position within our engineering team will suit a committed and ambitious engineer who can demonstrate strong technical, leadership and interpersonal skills combined with commercial, contractual awareness, delivery experience and the ability to play their part in growing a dynamic high-performance team.

 

 

With a focus on infrastructure design delivery the post-holder will support Design and Technical leads, utilising their broad civil, structural, environmental and Intelligent Transport Systems engineering skills to manage tender designs and disciplines during delivery. The post-holders working knowledge of the Design Manual for Urban Roads and Streets (“DMURS”) Ireland Standards, TII guidelines regarding new roads cycle tracks and footpath designs, flood and drainage requirements and familiarity of working on a multi-disciplinary projects will play a key role in developing and being a part of a growing team delivering projects for a diverse portfolio of UK & Irish clients.

 

 

The Design Manager will be accountable for the design delivery of allocated engineering work packages or tender design packages, ensuring:

  • Establishment and implementation of the Project Plan for allocated work packages
  • Establishment and maintenance of forecasts, cost and revenue budgets
  • Management and documentation of all fee, programme and scope changes
  • Technical delivery of all the specified project outcomes on time, within budget and to the client’s specifications
  • Internal and external management between design disciplines including engineering, architectural, planning consultants and construction teams to ensure timely flow of design information and technical accuracy
  • Project requirements are fully met and deliverables provided to the highest quality
  • Management of technical risk, stakeholder and client interfaces and project requirements
  • Good relationships are maintained with all external parties to enhance the reputation of the company

Missions/Main Duties

 

Working in collaboration with our design teams, project managers, assurance, clients and contract partners, the Design Manager will be involved in a variety of tasks such as:

 

 

  • Implement systems and procedures to maintain a cost effective, high quality, safe and environmentally responsible approach to design, construction, commissioning and other activities on relevant projects, compliant with all project requirements and relevant legislation
  • Prepare and develop design programmes and monitor design development progress against delivery programme and budgets
  • Develop and maintain resource allocation plans against allocated project activities
  • Liaise with other design managers, projects and business lead to balance resources across the project
  • Apply project controls and procedures to allocated projects
  • Support Bid Managers with aspects of Tender Preparation
  • Implement contract administration processes, coordinate tender design activities and support the  procurement of Design and Build Contractors
  • Apply relevant techniques and procedures of quantified and qualitative risk assessment and HAZOP analysis to all projects
  • Ensure environmental aspects of all projects are managed in accordance with Environmental Policy
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation, particularly the CDM Regulations
  • Liaise with client, construction and procurement teams to ensure design timescales satisfy overall delivery objectives
  • Dealing with a range of stakeholders at all levels across the organisation, influencing the improvement of processes and providing guidance to support project delivery
  • Support the construction teams at all stages of the construction process where required
  • Development and review of ‘design management’ documentation and ensuring its correct use and application
  • Preparation of monthly progress reports and chairing design progress meetings
  • Develop and implement projects through from preliminary to detailed design with emphasis on client requirements, value for money and innovation
  • Assist and support the Technical Lead or Engineering Manager
  • Supervise team members including technical coordinator
  • Liaise with and co-ordinate UK and overseas multi-disciplinary design teams
  • Assist with contract preparation together with project planning and programming
  • Effective management of and response to project related correspondence
  • Support procurement in the appointment of contractors as and when required
  • Checks to ensure compliance with the Integrated Management System and assist in its development
  • Ensure project requirements are effectively communicated to the team, including any additional client requirements

Profile/Skills

  • Degree qualified within a relevant discipline
  • Experience of managing the coordinating multidisciplinary teams on infrastructure projects 
  • Experience managing design delivery programme and to budget
  • Broad Design Engineering experience gained on infrastructure projects
  • Good understanding of CDM regulations
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Working experience with ProjectWise and Bentley Systems
  • Professional Institution membership
