The Transport Economist will provide expert analysis and strategic insights into the economic and financial dimensions of transportation infrastructure and services. This role encompasses railway, road, and maritime transportation, including transshipment and intermodal logistics, with a focus on both freight (such as mining resources) and passenger transport. The Transport Economist will support project planning, investment decision-making, policy development, and business strategy to enhance the efficiency, sustainability, and economic viability of transportation systems.

• Market Analysis & Traffic Forecasting – Assess supply and demand trends, identify key market drivers, evaluate competitive dynamics, and forecast future transport volumes across different sectors.
• Economic & Financial Feasibility Assessments – Develop and apply financial models to evaluate the profitability, cost structures, and economic impact of new transport services, infrastructure projects, and operational changes.
• Investment Planning & Funding Strategies – Assess capital investment needs, explore funding mechanisms (e.g., public-private partnerships, government grants, private financing), and recommend optimal financing structures to ensure project feasibility.
• Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) & Public Funding Justification – Conduct economic evaluations to quantify benefits, measure cost-effectiveness, and support decision-making for public and private investment in transport projects.
• Policy & Program Evaluation – Analyze and assess transport regulations, policies, and subsidy programs to ensure their effectiveness, economic sustainability, and alignment with strategic transport priorities.
• Economic Impact Assessment – Evaluate how transport infrastructure projects influence regional development, economic diversification, job creation, and industry competitiveness.
• Business Plan Development – Contribute to the preparation of comprehensive business plans, integrating financial, operational, and market feasibility analyses to support strategic decision-making.
• Business Development & Opportunity Identification – Identify and assess new business opportunities within the transportation sector, including service expansion, infrastructure optimization, and strategic partnerships.

Education: University degree in economics or finance.

Years of experience: Between 5 and 10 years of relevant experience in transportation economics.

Technical competiencies :

• Experience in market research and traffic forecasting.
• Understanding of rail transport.
• Financial modeling skills
• Experience in multimodal transportation is an asset.
• Excellent writing and communication skills.
• Proficiency in advanced Excel functions.

Personal and soft skills :

• Ability to adapt and willingness to learn continuously, with a strong analytical and synthesizing mind.
• CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) certification an asset, particularly for evaluating investments and complex financial models.
• Availability for occasional travel in Quebec, Canada and internationally, depending on project needs.
• Ability to work in a team and interact with various stakeholders, including infrastructure experts, government decision-makers and local community representatives.
