Context

Are you a dedicated and ambitious graduate engineer with a passion for bridge design and project delivery? SYSTRA has an exciting opportunity for a Graduate Engineer to join our Bridges Engineering team in Glasgow.

This role focuses on the design of highway and conventional rail infrastructure, while also supporting a range of other product lines. Based in Glasgow, you will collaborate with engineers across the UK on a variety of projects. The role offers hybrid working, with regular attendance at client offices and on-site locations forming an integral part of project delivery.

Missions/Main Duties

Working in collaboration with senior engineers, the Graduate Engineer will be involved in a variety of tasks, including:

  • Supporting the design team with design activities, technical coordination, and the integration of multidisciplinary inputs.

  • Maintaining good working relationships with clients and ensuring their requirements are met.

  • Adapting to design challenges and developing practical solutions that consider quality, cost, and safety.

  • Ensuring all relevant design standards are met throughout the process, and liaising with design teams when issues arise.

  • Assisting with the organisation of design gate reviews throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Supporting the management of engineering schedules and deliverables.

  • Attending standards briefings and providing support where needed.

  • Assisting with the management of technical change during design development.

  • Liaising with clients to ensure their requirements are clearly communicated to the team.

  • Preparing and checking engineering designs, calculations, and drawings.

  • Drafting or reviewing technical documents and reports.

  • Ensuring compliance with relevant health, safety, and environmental legislation, particularly the CDM Regulations.

  • Maintaining clear and effective communication in all project-related correspondence.

  • Attending site visits and inspections to support design development and to gain a practical understanding of construction and asset condition.

Profile/Skills

Essential Requirements:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Master’s degree preferred).

  • Strong numerical and relevant technical skills.

  • Knowledge of bridge design or structural assessment, including design checking.

  • Enthusiasm for bridge engineering and a desire to develop a career in this field.

  • A proactive and self-motivated approach to learning and professional development.

  • Flexibility in working hours to meet project or site demands.

  • Willingness and ability to travel to client sites and other SYSTRA offices as required.

  • Awareness of health, safety, and environmental legislation, including CDM Regulations.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Working towards professional registration with the ICE or IStructE.

  • Familiarity with relevant design codes and standards, such as Eurocodes, DMRB, and Network Rail standards.

  • Awareness or basic knowledge of digital engineering tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, or bridge modelling software (e.g. LUSAS, MIDAS, SOFiSTiK).

  • Experience (e.g. through a placement or internship) in a bridge or infrastructure design environment.

  • Understanding of BIM processes and digital collaboration platforms.

  • Appreciation of whole-life design principles, asset management, or sustainable design approaches.

  • Valid UK driving licence.
