SYSTRA Canada is an engineering and consulting firm whose primary focus is to offer transportation solutions, whether for passengers or goods: feasibility studies of building a new railway line, increasing the capacity of the existing infrastructure, privatization of a railway.

 

Context

The ALTO project is a major infrastructure initiative in Canadian history, aimed at developing over 1,000 km of new passenger rail service between major urban centers, including Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City.

Missions/Main Duties

  • Oversee and conduct the characterization of physical environments (geology, geomorphology, physiography, surficial deposits) and perform geohazard risk assessments with recommended mitigation measures along rail corridors.
  • Lead or participate in fluvial-geomorphological and erosion studies, including bank stability and risk management.
  • Provide technical support and collaborate with the Environment and Engineering teams, multidisciplinary groups, and external partners.
  • Prepare and review technical and environmental reports, adapting specialized knowledge of Ontario and Quebec geology and geomorphology to projects across Canada.

Profile/Skills

Education : Master’s degree (M.Sc.) or Ph.D. in geomorphology, geology, geosciences, or a related field. Membership in a relevant professional order (e.g., OGQ, PGO) or the ability to obtain it quickly.

Years of experience : Minimum of 10 to 15 years of relevant experience, ideally in the rail, infrastructure, or environmental sectors.

Technical competencies :

  • Demonstrated experience in the characterization of physical environments, geological risk analysis, and conducting fluvial-geomorphological studies.
  • In-depth knowledge of the geology and geomorphology of Ontario and Quebec.
  • Proficiency with tools and methods for characterizing surficial deposits, analyzing watercourse mobility, and assessing geological risks.
  • Experience with major rail projects, team management, and knowledge of Canadian environmental regulations (an asset).
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills, both in French and in English*
