SYSTRA Canada is an engineering and consulting firm whose primary focus is to offer transportation solutions, whether for passengers or goods: feasibility studies of building a new railway line, increasing the capacity of the existing infrastructure, privatization of a railway.

 

Context

The Mechanical Designer will design structures, interior finishes, and various systems and components for rail vehicles, including locomotives, passenger cars, freight wagons, and maintenance equipment. They will produce designs using SolidWorks, SolidWorks PDM, and occasionally DraftSight.

Missions/Main Duties

  • Design and modify structures, equipment, and interior fittings for rail vehicles, including component layouts, supporting brackets, and fastening systems in compliance with standards and project requirements.
  • Create bolted, welded, and sheet metal assemblies using various materials (steel, stainless steel, aluminum), and develop sheet metal patterns/models.
  • Design plastic and composite components and select hardware items per engineering direction.
  • Prepare material lists and produce detailed drawings for modification, manufacturing, assembly, and installation.
  • Develop assembly manuals and installation instructions.
  • Conduct dimensional surveys on-site or in the workshop to support manufacturing and installation.

Profile/Skills

Education: College diploma (DEC) in mechanical design or Bachelor's degree in Engineering. 

Years of experience: Minimum 8 years experience in metal fabrication and mechanical design, including two years with Inventor or Solidworks 3D modeling software (Relevant experience with other modeling software may be considered equivalent).

 

Technical skills:

  • Proficient in 3D CAD design and drafting, specifically with SolidWorks, including the creation of detailed drawings and flat patterns for rail vehicle components.
  • Strong understanding of materials (metals, plastics, composites) and mechanical assembly methods (bolted, welded, sheet metal).
  • Capable of layout optimization and integration of components according to standards and project requirements.
  • Skilled in preparing material lists, technical documentation, and installation instructions.
  • Experience in dimensional verification on-site or in the workshop.

  • Detail-oriented and organized, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Effective problem-solver, adaptable to changing requirements.
  • Collaborative and communicates clearly within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills, both in French and in English*
