Context

As our In-House Legal Counsel, you'll be a key member of our small, dedicated legal team, providing crucial advice that shapes our strategic direction and mitigates risk. You will report directly to the Senior Legal Counsel, supporting their function and managing the full spectrum of legal affairs for the business.

Missions/Main Duties

  • Independently manage contract reviews, draft and negotiate contracts, and provide legal advice to the business with minimal supervision. Expertise required in NDAs, MOUs, tender services agreements, services agreements, joint venture (JV) agreements, and consultancy agreements (including sub-agreements).
  • Assisting the Senior Legal Counsel in ensuring the firm adheres to relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards, particularly in areas like WHS, environmental law, and corporate governance.
  • Managing and advising on potential disputes, claims, and litigation, escalating issues to the Senior Legal Counsel as necessary, and working closely with external counsel.
  • Work closely with all relevant internal stakeholders (including the Bid Management Team) to secure new contracts, extensions or renewals in order to serve the best interests of SYSTRA.
  • Offering timely and pragmatic legal advice across all operational areas of the business, serving as a vital resource for internal stakeholders.

Profile/Skills

  • 4-5 years PAE with a strong background in commercial law, preferably gained within a reputable private practice firm or a relevant in-house environment. Experience with construction, engineering, or infrastructure contracts is highly desirable.
  • Exceptional drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills.
  • A commercially astute, pragmatic, and solutions-focused approach. You must be comfortable working autonomously when required, eager to learn from a senior colleague, and possess excellent stakeholder management skills.
  • Currently holding a certificate to practice or admitted to legal practice in Victoria, Australia.
