Context

Be the technical lead on projects, inspire & expand the skill set of the team, safeguarding profitability through engagement with Project Managers and promote efficient engineering delivery based on a right first time principle

To lead and manage teams of Senior Civil Engineers, Engineers, Graduates and Technicians in the efficient and effective delivery of projects ensuring the needs of the Client and the business are met. Apply company procedures and systems to promote high levels of health, safety and wellbeing of staff and other stakeholders whilst personally contributing to and leading these initiatives.

Support our Technical Expert and Discipline Lead/ Head of Civil Engineering in delivering excellence and upholding the effective and consistent implementation of SYSTRA Company policies and procedures. As a principal engineer you will support the business in work winning and engineering delivery, maximising all opportunities with Clients.

Missions/Main Duties

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead design projects as directed, ensuring Client commitments are met.
  • Undertake the duties of designer as highlighted in CDM legislation.
  • Act as designer, checker and approver on projects as directed.
  • Carry out the role of Contractor’s Responsible Engineer on Network Rail projects or a comparable role in non-rail projects.
  • Deliver a portfolio of projects to the required quality, time and budget.
  • Monitor project and team performance against contracts and project quality plans taking necessary corrective action.
  • Manage the checking and approval process to ensure compliance with both client and business requirements.
  • Support the sales team to maximise both company and team opportunities with Clients.
  • Input into bids through pricing, resourcing and responding tender questions.
  • Act as Lead Engineer on projects, reporting financial progress and taking necessary corrective action.
  • Contribute to the team’s achievement of Annual Plan by meeting or exceeding project targets.
  • Day to day management, planning, leading and motivating your team.
  • Maintain utilisation targets for the business.
  • Responsible for management and personnel issues for direct reports.
  • Develop staff to ensure the skills are available within the team to meet business objectives.
  • Supervise training of staff.
  • Review and monitor staff performance via the appraisal process and other methods.
  • Manage relationships with various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Apply procedures and systems to ensure the safety and wellbeing of your team and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain and encourage best practice through regular lessons learning and “Learn-it” sessions.
  • Inputting and developing the Systra civil engineering library.   

Team Leadership

  • Day to day planning, leading, and motivating your team.
  • Support to the leading of engineering staff within the applicants’ home office.
  • Responsible for management and personnel issues for direct reports.
  • Develop staff to ensure the skills are available within the team to meet business objectives.
  • Supervise training of staff.
  • Review and monitor staff performance via the appraisal process and other methods.
  • Manage relationships with various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Apply procedures and systems to ensure the safety and wellbeing of your team and other stakeholders.
  • Support those undertaking part-time education through diversity in project work.

Profile/Skills

To be successful in this role, we are looking for:

  • Relevant degree.
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution.
  • Professionally qualified Chartered or Incorporated Engineer.
  • Ability in the application of safety standards and CDM regulations.
  • Ability in the application and teaching of civil engineering design principles and standards.
  • Ability in the application and teaching of construction principles and standards including experience of project delivery in construction related markets.
  • Experienced at working with contractors in a design and build environment.
  • Experienced working within the Infrastructure sector (Rail / Water / Energy )
  • Experience of contract conditions, processes and procedures.
  • Ability in programming, delivery, budgets and timescales.
  • Experience of the transportation sector.
  • Experience of line management.
  • Experience of designing and checking civil engineering deliverables.
  • Ability in the use of Eurocodes and/or other structural design packages.
  • Experience in the use of computer analysis programs.
  • Good command of written and spoken English.
