Context

Within an engineering consulting firm, the Field Team Lead for Vegetation oversees the execution of field activities related to floristic inventories and associated habitats. They plan, coordinate, and supervise inventory, delineation, and monitoring campaigns; ensure the application of protocols and health and safety requirements; and safeguard data integrity to support analyses, mapping, and regulatory approvals. This role is pivotal in translating technical and regulatory objectives into efficient, traceable field operations.

Missions/Main Duties

  • Planning and Field Logistics: Contribute to sampling plan development, site access planning, and logistical details (lodging, vehicles, equipment). Allocate tasks, anticipate seasonal constraints, and optimize schedules to meet biological windows.
  • Technical Field Supervision: Supervise biologists and technicians during floristic inventories and habitat characterization. Ensure adherence to protocols and the quality of observations.
  • Quality Assurance, Data, and GIS: Implement QA/QC for field data and coordinate structured transfers to databases and GIS teams. Contribute to sketches, figures, and technical notes, and promptly flag any anomalies that may affect analyses.
  • Health, Safety, and Risk Management: Work with the HSE lead to ensure team safety in the field.

Profile/Skills

Education : Degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related field (BSc required; relevant DEC considered).
Years of experience : Five years of experience in vegetation and wetland inventories and delineation, including experience coordinating field teams.
Technical competencies :

  • Proficiency with floristic inventory protocols and habitat characterization methodologies.
  • Strong ability to identify native species and invasive alien plants.
  • Comfortable with GPS, mobile data-collection applications, and GIS suites (QGIS/ArcGIS); experienced in metadata management and basic photo-interpretation; familiarity with LiDAR is an asset.
  • Excellent field record-keeping, strong QA/QC rigor, and clear drafting of technical notes and reports.
  • Good knowledge of the Québec framework for species of special status and the methodological guides used in Québec.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills, both in French and in English*
