Context

We are looking for an experienced Principal Engineer (Water and Flood Risk) to support the delivery of projects across the United Kingdom. This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong engineer with advanced expertise in SuDS and water engineering who can bring leadership, sound judgement and practical design insight to complex multidisciplinary schemes.

In this role, you will play a key part in delivering technically robust and well-coordinated engineering solutions, with responsibility for the design delivery of allocated work packages within the water team. You will help ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget and in line with client requirements, while contributing to reporting, cost estimating and high-quality project outcomes.

Missions/Main Duties

  • Take a leading role in shaping the design approach for water and flood risk projects, bringing together multidisciplinary inputs and helping resolve technical, standards and stakeholder challenges with confidence.
  • Drive the delivery of work packages from planning through to completion, helping to define priorities, allocate tasks, manage dependencies and maintain strong control of programme, budget and quality.
  • Provide clear technical leadership throughout project delivery, setting key design checkpoints and guiding teams toward safe, practical and right-first-time outcomes.
  • Help ensure that solutions are aligned with project specifications and acceptance criteria, while keeping a close focus on reporting requirements, cost control and timely delivery.
  • Support and coach engineers and graduates on a day-to-day basis, offering direction, technical review and constructive feedback that strengthens both individual performance and team capability.
  • Contribute to smarter, more efficient delivery by developing repeatable methods, practical tools and improved approaches that solve design challenges and reduce cycle time.
  • Work collaboratively across designers, disciplines and locations, coordinating contributions effectively and ensuring delegated work is delivered to a consistently high standard.
  • Build strong relationships with UK and international teams, including offshore production centres, to deliver integrated drainage and flood risk solutions with consistency and quality.
  • Lead CDM design compliance activity, helping teams demonstrate hazard elimination, capture lessons learned and support a culture of continuous improvement.

Profile/Skills

  • Degree qualified in a relevant Engineering discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status preferred, with membership such as MICE or CIWEM.
  • Strong experience and technical knowledge in drainage, SuDS and wider water engineering design.
  • A sound understanding of how water and flood risk design integrates within transportation or civil engineering projects.
  • Proficiency in relevant software such as MicroDrainage, InfoWorks and OpenRoads.
  • Experience leading teams, whether through direct line management or virtual project leadership, with the ability to bring others together around successful delivery.
